Everything is falling apart. Hope has dried up. Pick up a blade or a bow, and set your mind to it. This is the dark ages after all.

Mud & Blood is a concise game for running rules light medieval dark fantasy roleplaying details on one side of A3 (but still printable on A4) and character sheets fit on Tarot cards.

Features:

  • Player only rolling with a d6 pool system.
  • GMs use common sense to guide the action.
  • Characters are made in minutes, and fit on a Tarot Card size. Progression is simple but impactful.
  • No hit points to track, just Wounds and Stress as consequences of actions.
  • Equipment sets, rather than tracking individual items.
  • Fiction first, partial successes, with critical failures and successes too.

Comes with:

  • The rules on a pdf spread
  • Fillable pdf character card
  • An A4 sheet with 4 character cards for printing

Mud & Blood is inspired by the likes of World of Dungeons and Blades in the Dark by John Harper, Cairn by Yochai Gal, as well as OSR in general and Apocalypse World.

I really like this game, however printing it seems very ink heavy. I have seen Mud and Blood 2e, but I rather this version. I would love it if someone could convert the rules to text. I tried to copy paste it, but it didn't work. If I had the text version it would also be very easy to hack the system and make it work for more settings (like sci-fi). Overall this is a great game, I highly enjoy it.

Hey there!

This is something I can probably look to do in the future.

Right now, I have Kickstarter fulfilment going on and a couple of other projects that are priority.

But at some point I will try to get a print friendly version up!

Hi. Nice little ruleset! I love x-in-6 rolls, they deserve more love.

I spotted a small typo: in the “Toughen” bullet point, there’s a capital letter I instead of the number 1.

Hey! I think that’s actually just a quirk of the font, it does an automatic Roman numeral substitution for the number one for a bit of ‘style’. The second edition uses a less stylised typeface and doesn’t have any odd numberings if you prefer!

Simple and good ;Now produce good bloody and muddy intrigues to come with it !

These should be coming soon I hope!

i have a question about your system. As it is written, i'm not sure that only the players roll dices , and are wounded, stressed according to the reesults (as teh ennemies have opportunities to 'harm' them), or do PC and GM take turns ?

The first seems more probable (as there is a rule about the 'level' of success to have to solve a 'problem'), but i'd prefer to ask your view about your own game .

Players do only roll 😊 when they roll a result with Backlash, the GM then decides what that Backlash will be (typically guided by common sense). So the players take action (as long as the GM seems it a reasonable thing to do), the dice decide whether it’s successful, and if they have Backlash the GM decides what it’s going to be.

So when a player decides to engage an opponent (let’s say with Might) and they roll a result with Backlash, the GM might choose to deal them a wound if it makes sense in the combat scenario. I hope that helps 😊

Yes, very much. That's what i thought.

Can you tell us more about the scenario/party you played ?
I'm considering an optional (advanced) rule about the possibility 'stockpiling backlash' (some of it- maybe a pile of dices in the middle of the table). To make something nasty of it when it crumbles, or when the Dm 'take the hand'...

Hey Oliver, apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I’ve been working on Written in Blood, an adventure site/scenario collection which I’ve put up today. It should give you an idea of the kinds of scenarios I run!
